NOT Your Grandma's Castor Oil

When we hear someone mention “Castor Oil,” many of us immediately reflect back on our childhood when our grandmother recommended this strange oil for almost every ailment from back pain to acne. But, this oil is making a resurgence on today’s natural beauty scene in a big way, and for good reasons! Studies have recently found that the benefits of this under-appreciated oil extend far beyond its historical uses and absolutely shine in the skin, hair and body care realm! It’s time to rethink what you think you know about Castor oil!

Native to India, Castor oil comes from the castor seed, Ricinus communis. This seed is unique in that it has a very unusual chemical profile. It is composed of over 90 percent ricinoleic acid, much higher than other comparable seeds. This high concentration is thought to be the basis of Castor oil’s versatile healing properties.

Praised for its use in alleviating back pain, inflammation and constipation in the past, Castor oil is now making its mark in the skin and hair care market. The oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it a gentle and effective treatment for acne and various skin infections. It is also extremely high in Vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and Omega 6 and 9 beneficial fatty acids, which make Castor oil very reparative and hydrating to both skin and hair.

For years, Castor oil has been used in home remedies to both prevent and treat hair loss in men and women. It is believed that both the anti-fungal and antibacterial properties of the oil calm the inflammation of folliculitis, reduce the fungal activity in some forms of dandruff, and that the unique concentration of ricinoleic acid boosts scalp circulation – leading to more hair growth.

Our scalps have a very delicate pH that can be easily disrupted. Ricinoleic acid is thought to balance this pH and help replenish the natural oils of the scalp. This makes it very beneficial in correcting the damage that some of our popular styling products can cause to our scalp. The antioxidant level in Castor oil also seems to support the keratin in our hair and allow hair to grow stronger and smoother.

Additional Benefits of Castor oil to Hair Include:
